The School Farm

The Sheffield School Farm is located approximately 1km from the main campus. The 64 hectare property continues to operate as a successful commercial dairy enterprise milking 130 cows. A number of other small enterprises are maintained such as beef, sheep, pigs and a vegetable garden to provide practical 'hands on' opportunities for students as part of the Food and Fibre Production learning programs.

Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Primary students have weekly Food and Fibre lessons accessing a range of experience at the main school campus and including some visits to the School Farm.   Students from Years 7 – 12 have the opportunity to choose Food and Fibre Production subjects aligned with the Australian Curriculum – Food and Fibre Production and access the farm weekly.

Vocational Education and Learning (VET) Certificate II in Agriculture

Students in Years 11 – 12 have the opportunity to study Certificate II in Agriculture at our School Farm. The course covers 18 modules over two years including: Livestock Health, Irrigation, Operating Farm Machinery, and Occupational Health and Safety.

One of the highlights each calendar year for the Sheffield School Farm is hosting the Junior Cattle Handlers Show of Tasmania where school children from across the state come to parade and judge beef and dairy cattle. This event has been running for over 25 years and is well supported by members of the agricultural sector in our region.

Sheffield School is part of a state-wide Revitalising School Farms (RSF) Initiative providing leadership in the development of exemplary Food and Fibre Production educational opportunities for students through primary, secondary, year 11-12 and VET courses.  The RSF network includes 15 schools across the state and provides educational leadership in curriculum development and planning for teachers through this professional network.  As part of the RSF funding the Sheffield School Farm is undergoing a multi-million dollar redevelopment to modernise the School Farm facilities to enable high quality learning experiences.
